Old Oak Trees
Details!
Old Oak Trees is a factual retelling of a story told to me by my Grandmother. Young Doris Longdon is convinced that there are delightful faeries living in the woods behind the family farm, and she leaves letters to them in the hollows of oak trees, hoping the faeries will communicate with her. Her resolve is tested, though, when her brothers maliciously inform her of a large, man-eating bear that also lurks in the forest. Doris makes one last, terrified attempt to contact the faeries, and — much to her surprise — finds herself introduced to a faerie prince! He encourages Doris to hunt for the bear with him, though as they encounter more and more of the forest’s inhabitants, it becomes clear that Doris’ initial concerns were misdirected…
Old Oak Trees was my first published work and formed a small piece of the excellent Flight: Volume 3 anthology. It was nominated for a Will Eisner Award in the “Best Short Story” category.
